Why do we use Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) instead of Black Tea

All our Tub Power Teas contain Freeze-dried Pure Green Tea, made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, which is rich in antioxidants, which are compounds that help protect the body from oxidative stress and free radicals. The primary antioxidants found in green tea include;

Theanine - An amino acid that is not an antioxidant but contributes to the unique flavour of green tea and has been studied for its potential relaxing and calming effects.

Catechins - These are a type of polyphenol and are considered some of the most potent antioxidants in green tea. The main catechins in green tea are;

  • Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG): The most studied catechin, known for its health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-microbial properties.
  • Epigallocatechin (EGC)
  • Epicatechin gallate (ECG)
  • Epicatechin (EC)
  • Flavonoids: Besides catechins, green tea contains other flavonoids, which contribute to its antioxidant properties and health benefits.

The high concentration of catechins, especially EGCG, is what makes green tea particularly noted for its health benefits, including reducing the risk of heart disease, aiding in weight loss, and potentially lowering the risk of certain types of cancer. The antioxidant capacity of green tea is believed to be higher than that of black tea because of the difference in processing; green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the catechins from oxidising, whereas black tea is fermented, causing catechins to convert into other compounds.
